Thieves stole a 120-foot radio tower in Windber, PA. Along with the tower, the thieves also made off with more than 120 feet of heavy copper wire.  The price of copper scrap has more than tripled over the past few years making the theft of copper an increasingly serious problem.

The tower was currently unused but was being considered for conversion for mobile phone or Internet use. Police reports suggest that the tower was probably pulled down with a truck, then cut up into pieces with torches before being removed.  Bolts and burn marks on the grass near where the tower had stood tend to support this line of reasoning.
