EBS Substantial Service Deadline Extended!

Great news for Educational Broadband Service (EBS) license holders, the Federal Communications Commission has granted an extension to file showings of Substantial Service for EBS license holders. On March 21, 2011 the FCC adopted a memorandum and order that concludes, “we waive the requirements for licensees to individually file extension requests. We also extend the deadline for all EBS licensees to demonstrate substantial service to November 1, 2011” http://www.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2011/db0322/DA-11-532A1.pdf. BRS licensees are still required to show service prior to May 1, 2011.
EBS licenses are very valuable. Even if an EBS licensee has not been able to lease the allowed percentage of the license yet, this spectrum is ever increasing in value as the demand for broadband services increases. The very ambitious National Broadband Plan makes it clear that spectrum shortage is a serious issue. It should be obvious that every EBS license has the potential to be a tremendous asset to any educational institution. As our world demands more information availability on an instantaneous basis, our educational institutions cannot afford to lose the rights to this critical spectrum. Don’t pass up this opportunity to preserve your license; it will serve your institution financially and technologically.
• If you have not leased your spectrum you must establish at least the minimum service to qualify for a showing of Substantial Service.
• As stewards of education in our great nation, using your spectrum to further your educational mission is a worthy goal for any institution with an EBS license. The mere use of this spectrum can be a demonstration to your students of great things to come.
