Is This Master Clock Good
Enough….
Or Do You Need Better Time and
Frequency Standards for Your System?
LBA offers a variety of practical, economical systems for provisioning of ultra-precise master clock timing, synchronizing and reference frequency functions.
Precision timing and synchronization are vital to our internet and wireless infrastructure; efficiently maximizing the use of bandwidth and meshing the flow of network data. Precise timing requirements appear in a variety of other industries, from banking to E911, the healthcare industry and power utilities. Digital television and DTV transmission systems could not function without synchronization to precise time standards. Navigation systems, avionics and military communications are other applications in which precision timing is essential.
Primary reference atomic master clock time standards are huge and costly systems. Fortunately, the precision of these master clocks, like the ones maintained by the US Naval Observatory (USNO), is readily available through the GPS satellite system.

USNO Master Clock
GPS uses 24 satellites in orbit. Each contains four atomic clocks transmitting location information. This data is modulated onto the satellite carrier frequency, repeated at very precise time intervals controlled by the onboard atomic clocks. The GPS system is synchronized and controlled by the USNO. The ground clock GPS receiver, such as offered by LBA, translates these signals, effectively disciplining the local reference to the atomic clocks onboard the satellites. For stability and redundancy the local reference employs very high stability and low phase noise OXCO thermally controlled crystal oscillators.
Thus, GPS disciplined master clock systems can give accurate time to the nanoseconds – at reasonable cost and in small packages. They can provide synchronization virtually anywhere in the world, referenced to UTC time. Because of the highly stable disciplined oscillators, short term stability is adequate to continue precision signals for a defined time in the absence of GPS reception.
LBA systems can even provide GPS accuracy when GPS is unavailable! Once synchronized with GPS, the TAREF300 time standard maintains a rubidium standard accuracy adequate to use as a transfer standard to periodically synchronize other TAREF and FNX-GPS systems in the absence of a GPS reference, such as within shielded spaces or building basements.
TAREF reference clocks can also be used as very precise reference frequency sources for standardizing the outputs of the Schomandl ND and SG series of frequency synthesizers and generators for critical R&D, control and test environments. Similarly, the precision timing references may be inputted to the Kathrein MSK-200 digital TV analyzer for precision measurements of DTV systems.
